Kato gained international attention for his paintings that feature human figures resembling fetuses. He is one of Japan’s most celebrated artists, acclaimed worldwide. Chiso, a venerable Kyoto-based textile company, is celebrating its 470th anniversary. Kato’s one-of-a-kind sensibility has been transformed into kimono through Chiso’s traditional techniques.

Kato was deeply involved in the production process, even visiting the dyeing workshops himself. The exhibition gently dissolves the boundaries between art and craft.
