Currently being held at Tokyo City View is the exhibition Osamu Tezuka’s Hinotori Exhibition –”Phoenix” is the Dynamic Equilibrium against Increasing Entropy and is the Symbol for Cosmic Life.

This is where visitors can experience the “philosophy of life” woven throughout the lifetime of Osamu Tezuka, a singular artist.

Highlights

As the subtitle of the exhibition suggests, Hinotori (Phoenix ) is a grand epic that continuously portrays the cycle and reincarnation of life beyond the individual. Through the exhibition of a total of approximately 800 items, mainly autographs, videos, and related materials, Tezuka’s philosophy and aesthetic, reaching across time and space, are brought to life.

The exhibition is planned and supervised by biologist Shinichi Fukuoka. It delves into 12 major chapters of the series, from Dawn to Sun, shedding new light on the intersection between science and art. The world of Hinotori is illuminated through multifaceted perspectives, including philosophy, religion, history, and science.

The exhibition also features sensory-rich elements that appeal to the viewer’s emotions. One such feature is the non-alcoholic cocktail “Karmatini,” a special drink inspired by the “karma” imposed by the Phoenix. This unique concept allows visitors to experience the ethical dilemmas embedded in Tezuka’s work through taste and sight.

Reading Hinotori is an act of confronting the essence of life itself, setting out on a journey where human loneliness and hope intersect. Osamu Tezuka, through the popular medium of manga, approached the very essence of art, making him an exceptionally rare figure in art history. This exhibition encapsulates the trajectory of that profound artistic challenge.

Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a manga lover, or simply someone moved by the mystery of life, this exhibition offers an unmissable voyage of the spirit.
